Rocks - a short film by David O'Mahony

Logline: A scared and anxious guy is struggling to leave his home but when he does he finds someone is leaving him mysterious painted stones with what feels like a sinister message. The story During the pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 many people found it difficult of nigh on impossible to leave their homes. The fear of the serious virus would be enough to debilitate many, but the fear and unknown of what was going on in the world was enough to make anyone paranoid and anxious. The creator of our short film ‘Rocks’, David O’Mahony, was no different. Everyone you passed in the street could be a carrier or a vulnerable person. The uncertainty of the entertainment industry meant the first time father felt an extra weight of responsibility. Grateful for the time to spend with his family (his daughter Isla was born a few days before lockdown); but also, sometimes rooted to the spot and fearful of opening the door. During this time, the relationships and camaraderie discovered in unlikely or just new places got many people through. In big cities, it’s rare to see a lot of your neighbours. You might know their names and exchange pleasantries but how many of our neighbours did we ‘KNOW’ before lockdown. Sometimes, a random act of kindness, sometimes anonymous kindness would make all the difference to people who were with dealing with personal struggles or the struggles of society as we tried to navigate through the most testing time since WW2. ‘Rocks’ is a film about hope, fear, strength and fragility. Filmed during the summer 2020 lockdown by socially distanced neighbours. Rocks is, as a creation, a collaboration against the odds of adversity. “A single act of kindness can change the course of someone’s life” The film opens with a plethora of unpaid bills and final demand notices scattered on a table. A phone lies there with numerous messages from ‘Mum’ becoming more and more concerned. Suddenly we see a letterbox and some manic, paranoid eyes. Our lead is obviously paranoid about setting foot outside and attempts to push himself. On each of these attempts he comes across painted stones with single words. The first 3 spell out ‘You are not…’. Our lead breaks with paranoia. ‘You are not worthy’? ‘You are not going to survive’? ‘You are not welcome here’? What could they mean? What was the person’s intentions? His paranoia and anxiety about his World cannot take this surprising addition of the unknown and he breaks down. The next morning his fears are alleviated with the discovery of the final rock on his doorstep. He discovers that the rocks now spell out ‘You are not…alone’. His fear and paranoia is lifted. He redeems his life and turns from dishevelled, shell of a man to hopeful, smiling person with their face to the sun. Meet the creator David O’Mahony is a director, actor, producer, filmmaker, photographer, writer and teacher. That’s too many roles so maybe it’s easier to say David is a creator and storyteller. Trained at The Central School of Speech and Drama and Brunel University, David has many West End and film credits to his name. In March 2020 he was in the West End production of Mamma Mia and about to become a father. in a matter of weeks he, and the rest of the World, were plunged into a pandemic where the outside World became a scary and intimidating space. Fast forward two years and David is the proud father of a firecracker of a daughter; is trailblazing as a director and filmmaker while also taking lead roles in feature films such as ‘The Three Musketeers’. David produces and directs audio dramas for Big Finish while cultivating his screen work. David wrote, directed and performed in Rocks which was primarily filmed by his filmmaking enthusiast-gardener next door neighbour James Gray; and his wife, actress Ali Bastian. David then had the great privilege to collaborate on the music with composer Matt Nalton - giving Rocks a unique and powerful musical backdrop. David lives in London with Ali, Isla and two dogs with some new additions planned for 2023.
